Harry Rudolph of La Jolla and Patrick Cantlay of Los Alamitos, who both shot 3-under-par 69 yesterday, are tied after the first round at the California State Amateur Championship at Rancho Santa Fe Golf Club and La Jolla Country Club in San Diego County.

Rudolph, 40, who won the 1991 California State Amateur, the 2010 Kelly Cup and is last year’s San Diego City champion, and Cantlay, 18, the 2010 CIF-CGA State High School Boys champion, lead three golfers tied at 2-under-par 70 — Burlingame’s Randy Haag, Coto de Caza’s Scott Almquist and Riverside’s Kevin Fitzgerald.

Defending champion Geoff Gonzalez of San Luis Obispo, who started his round at La Jolla, is tied for 36th at 2-over-par 74.

Tuesday, players will switch courses and players will be cut to the lowest 32 scores. Following the round, the stroke-play medalist will be awarded and the seeding will be set for the start of match play Wednesday at Rancho Santa Fe.
