![]() Scott Travers of Trabuco Canyon won the 99th edition of the California State Amateur at Rancho Santa Fe Golf Club (COURTESY: SCGA). The 22-year-old Travers engineered a fast start with birdies on four of his first six holes, then hung onto the lead until closing out the match on the 33rd hole. “As a player, you have to be able to finish tournaments, and it’s a relief to do it,” he said. “I putted awesome, everything rolled really true.” Rudolph, whose family has owned and operated Harry’s Coffee Shop in La Jolla since 1960, came into the final with the heavy support of friends and family members. He bested former U.S. Mid-Amateur winner and two time SCGA Amateur champion Kevin Marsh 1-up in the semifinals, but couldn’t generate any momentum against Travers. Despite three birdies and an eagle against only one bogey on his opening 18 holes, Rudolph headed to the second half of the match down three holes and only captured one hole — the 32nd, when Travers already had a 5-up edge with five holes remaining. “I didn’t quite have my game today, it seemed all my yardages were ’tweeners that I didn’t have the right club for,” said Rudolph, who captured the 1991 California State Amateur title at Pebble Beach Golf Links. “I just never got it close, and I was having to save par the whole time.” The 6-foot-4 Travers isn’t exactly a household name on the men’s collegiate golf scene, although he is coming off of a stellar junior season at Santa Clara University with nine top-10 finishes in 12 events. His 71.56 stroke average led to his recognition as the West Coast Conference Player of the Year, and he finished the year ranked 107th in the country by Golfweek. In the stroke-play portion of the State Amateur, Travers opened with a 2-over-par 74 at La Jolla Country Club then posted an even-par 72 at Rancho Santa Fe to earn the No. 19 seed for match play. He faced little resistance in match play, winning by comfortable margins of 5-and-4, 4-and-2, 3-and-2 and 5-and-3 en route to his duel with Rudolph. This marked the first time the California State Amateur was held in San Diego County. The event had previously been held exclusively held at Pebble Beach, a policy that changed in 2007 when it shifted to Monterey Peninsula Country Club. It now maintains a rotation between the northern and southern parts of the state. Click here for complete results from the California State Amateur.
