The annual Century Club Matches bring together squads of top San Diego County amateurs and professionals. Always one of the most spirited team competitions in Southern California, this year's event added a unique twist to the rivalry. The amateurs defeated the pros by a 14-10 margin over the weekend at Fairbanks Ranch Country Club in Rancho Santa Fe. It was the team's largest margin of victory since the scoring format was altered in 1997. The all-time series is now all square at 19-19-1. Because qualifying guidelines were modified for the amateur team heading into this year's Matches, the group had four rookies. Two of them — Harry Rudolph III and John Kollus — each won all three of their matches. That duo was at their best during the singles round Sunday. In the day's marquee match, Rudolph made quick work of Chris Starkjohann with a 6-and-5 victory, while Kollus was even more efficient against Grant Strobel, winning 7-and-6. "This is the most fun I’ve had in a golf tournament, by far," the 31-year-old Kollus told the San Diego Union-Tribune. In a series of team matches over the first two days of competition on Friday and Saturday, the amateurs built a significant 8.5-3.5 lead. The pros made up ground in singles with a 6-1-1 mark in the first eight duels, but the amateurs regained control with victories in the final four matches. "Nobody was happy to just be here. They all wanted to win," Rudolph said to the San Diego Union-Tribune. The 12-man amateur team was comprised of Rudolph (Torrey Pines Golf Course), Kollus (The Farms Golf Club), Bucky Coe (La Jolla Country Club), Patrick Duncan, Patrick "Buddy" Duncan Jr. (both of Rancho Santa Fe Golf Club), Jimmy Harris (San Diego Country Club), Jeff Hunter (Fairbanks Ranch), Howie Knodt (San Diego Country Club), Don O'Connor (San Luis Rey Downs Country Club), Pete Roberts (TaylorMade Golf), Scott Stevens (Country Club of Rancho Bernardo) and Mark Stuart (La Jolla Country Club). Joe Wagner was captain, and Pete Sanchez was co-captain. The 12-man professional team featured Starkjohann (Torrey Pines Gold Club & Golf Outings), Strobel (Fairbanks Ranch), Greg Casagranda (Encinitas Ranch Golf Club), Mark Fernando (Coronado Golf Course), Gary Glaser (The Crossings at Carlsbad), Justin Hicks, Scott Mahlberg, Mike Nokes (all of Stadium Golf Center), Chuck Minred, Bruce Nakamura (Aviara Golf Academy), Tim Parun (Sail Ho Golf Club) and Gary Sowinski. Greg Prudham (Warner Springs) served as captain, and Renny Brown (Aviara) was co-captain. ALSO SEE: Starkjohann makes history with win at 2010 SCPGA Section Championship |
