The Poway native hasn’t contended for many titles since then — in 105 starts between that win and this week’s Deutsche Bank Championship, he has posted just three top-five finishes. But Hoffman engineered one of the best days of his golf career Monday, shooting a 9-under-par 62 in the final round of the Deutsche Bank to post a 22-under total and win by five shots over three players at TPC Boston in Norton, Mass. The scintillating effort at the Tour’s second FedEx Cup playoff event featured 11 birdies, including five in a six-hole stretch on the front nine. A holed greenside bunker shot on the par-4 13th gave Hoffman the outright lead. “I didn't have any clue how many birdies I made, I just was trying to keep making birdies,” he said. “To go out and shoot 62 on a pretty tough golf course … it’s fun.” Geoff Ogilvy, Luke Donald and 54-hole leader Jason Day finished tied for second at 17-under par, while Tom Gillis, Adam Scott and Brandt Snedeker tied for third at 16 under. The 33-year-old began the week 59th in the FedEx Cup standings, well positioned to finished inside the top 70 and qualify for next week’s BMW Championship. Instead, he vaulted all the way to second place with two playoff events remaining and pocketed a cool $1,350,000. What’s more, Hoffman has merited consideration for a spot on the United States Ryder Cup team. Captain Corey Pavin makes his four wild card selections for the 12-man team Tuesday morning, and although Hoffman finished a distant 57th in the standings when they closed last month, his win signals he could continue his solid form when the matches are held in Wales early next month. “They're going to be a great team if I'm on it or off it, but obviously I'd love to be on it,” he said. Other notable Southern California finishers at the Deutsche Bank Championship: • After beginning the tournament with a 1-over par 72, Cypress native Tiger Woods posted rounds of 65-69-69 to finish tied for 11th, his best effort since tying for fourth at the U.S. Open in June. “This was a good week,” said Woods, who moved from 65th to 51st in the FedEx Cup standings to seal his spot in the BMW Championship. The top 30 players in the FedEx following that event qualify for The Tour Championship. • The week ended less optimistically for Phil Mickelson. The San Diegan began the final round five shots off the lead but plummeted to a tie for 25th following a 5-over-par 76. The No. 1 spot in the Official World Golf Rankings also was within reach, but Mickelson will instead spend another week at the No. 2 spot. “I'm just trying to get my game right now,” he said. • Orange native Hunter Mahan (64-70-71-74) and former Diamond Bar resident Kevin Na (69-67-70-73) were part of a four-way tie for 33rd. Each is safely inside the top 70 in the FedEx Cup standings and will play in the third playoff event. • Also advancing in the FedEx Cup is Murrieta resident Rickie Fowler, who tied for 41st. • Long Beach native Paul Goydos finished alone in 70th and did not accumulate enough points to advance in the FedEx Cup.
