The Chevron World Challenge, held annually at Sherwood Country Club in Thousand Oaks, is one of professional golf’s “Silly Season” events. This year, though, the tournament should mean a lot to serious Southern California golf fans. Tiger Woods, the tournament host, will play in front of Southland galleries for the first time since winning the 2008 U.S. Open at Torrey Pines. The Cypress native missed last year’s Chevron and all of this season’s local PGA Tour events while recovering from knee surgery. He has won the Chevron four times, including back-to-back in 2006 and 2007. Woods comes into this year’s edition with more than $20 million in PGA Tour winnings in 2009. Of note this year is that the field has been expanded from 16 to 18 players. Notable competitors include Steve Stricker, L.A. native Anthony Kim, Padraig Harrington and Y.E. Yang, who topped Woods at the PGA Championship in August. MORE INFORMATION: CHEVRON WORLD CHALLENGE When: Thursday, December 3 through Sunday, December 6.
