Riley holds share of Wyndham Championship lead heading to weekend

San Diego native looking to lock up 2010 PGA Tour card and entry into 2009 FedEx Cup playoffs.

BY ELI MILLERPublished: August, 2009

San Diego’s Chris Riley followed an opening 4-under-par 66 Thursday with a 7-under 63 in Friday’s second round at the PGA Tour’s Wyndham Championship, and he held a share of the lead with Ryan Moore at 11-under par when play concluded Friday at Sedgefield Country Club in Greensboro, N.C.

Several players, including Moore were still on the course when the second round was halted because of darkness.

Riley made seven birdies and no bogeys Friday, needing only 25 putts. So far, he ranks second in the field in putts per green in regulation and tied for second with total putts.

“I’m putting really well, and these greens are Donald Ross so you’ve got to be putting pretty well,” Riley said of his performance on the layout.

Citing exceptionally thick rough guarding the fairways, the 35-year-old Tour veteran has made it a point to utilize his 3-wood and hybrid off the tee more than driver in order to keep his ball in play.

“I’m not strong enough to really hit out of this kind of rough,” Riley said.

After rejoining the PGA Tour as a full-time member in 2009 through Qualifying School, Riley has improved significantly in the second half of the season — he missed the cut in five of his first eight events and didn’t finish better than a tie for 28th, but in his next eight events he’s missed only one cut and notched five top-25 finishes, including a tie for seventh at the U.S. Bank Championship.

The former U.S. Ryder Cup team member and 2002 Reno-Taho Open stood at 139th on the money list entering the week with $425,132 in earnings. A solid finish at Wyndham would not only improve his chances of retaining his playing privileges for 2009, but also vault him into the field for the FedEx Cup playoffs, which begin next week at The Barclays. Riley is currently 129th in the FedEx standings, and the top 125 players are eligible.
