Starkjohann makes history with SCPGA Section Championship victory

Oceanside resident becomes first player ever to win full-field and senior SCPGA titles in same year.

BY ELI MILLERPublished: September, 2010

Chris Starkjohann shows off the hardware from his victory at the SCPGA Section Championship (COURTESY: SCPGA).
Already one of the most accomplished PGA professionals in Southland history, Chris Starkjohann added to his legacy Wednesday by winning the Southern California PGA Section Championship at Oakmont Country Club in Glendale.

After posting a pair of 1-over-par 72s in the first two rounds of the 54-hole stroke-play event, the Oceanside resident’s 6-under-par 65 in the final round gave him a 4-under total and a four-shot triumph over Tim Parun of Sail Ho Golf Course in San Diego.

Starkjohann, a PGA professional for Torrey Pines Gold Club & Outings, becomes the first player ever to win both the full-field and senior SCPGA Section titles in the same year. He posted rounds of 64 and 67 on the Legends Course at Beaumont’s East Valley Golf Club on August 23-24 to win the senior title by six strokes over a trio of players — Brad Sherfy, Jon Fiedler and Butch Sheehan.

That was Starkjohann’s third victory in that event, just as his triumph at Oakmont marked the third time he captured the full-field SCPGA title. His previous wins came in 1991 and 2004.

The win nets him exemptions into three prominent events — the 2010 Nationwide Tour Soboba Golf Classic, the 2011 PGA Tour Bob Hope Classic, and the 2011 PGA Professional National Championship.

Starkjohann is the only player ever to win the Senior PGA Professional of the Year award three times, having done so in 2006, 2007 and 2009. Among his recent accolades is a fifth-place finish at the 2009 Senior PGA Championship.

Grant Strobel, a PGA professional at Fairbanks Ranch Country Club in Rancho Santa Fe, had a three-stroke lead after the second round of the Section Championship but slipped to fourth place at 2-over par following a closing 75.

Home course favorite Donny Lee, a PGA professional at Oakmont, fired rounds of 70-73-71 to finished alone in third place at 1-over.
