Oceanside’s Starkjohann wins third Senior PGA Professional Player of the Year award

Fifth-place finish at 2009 Senior PGA Championship one of the main keys to record accomplishment.

Oceanside’s Chris Starkjohann has earned the 2009 Senior PGA Professional Player of the Year award.

The 53-year-old Starkjohann, a PGA teaching professional at Torrey Pines Gold Club and Outings and Hodges Golf Center, is the first player to win the honor three times. He previously won in 2006 and 2007.

Starkjohann’s drive toward a third Senior PGA Professional Player of the Year award was boosted by an impressive fifth-place finish in the 70th Senior PGA Championship last May – the best showing by a PGA club professional in the major since Tom Wargo won the 1993 title.

He also tied for eighth in the Senior PGA Professional National Championship and competed in six Champions Tour events, including the Senior British Open.

“My finish in the Senior PGA Championship was obviously the highlight of my year,” said Starkjohann. “It kept me going, and was the jump-start I needed. It has been my goal to earn a spot on the Champions Tour, and I felt that week [at Canterbury] helped me with confidence about playing with those great players.

“I am pleased to again win this award and it comes after doing what all PGA professionals must do – balance their lives in business and on the course. I have tried to balance my playing with the business that my wife and I operate from our home and while we are on the road. I also have kept up giving lessons at Hodges Golf Center [in Escondido], and will continue to give as many lessons as I can.”
