Tidland eagles final hole to win Preferred Health Systems Wichita Open

Victory assures Torrance native’s spot inside top 25 on Nationwide Tour money list.

BY ELI MILLERPublished: August, 2009

Chris Tidland came into last week’s Preferred Health Systems Wichita Open ninth on the Nationwide Tour money list, leaving a sliver of doubt about whether or not he’d finish inside the top 25 and earn a 2010 PGA Tour card.

That sliver is gone.

Tidland, a Torrance native, eagled the 72nd hole of the tournament to post a 16-under-par total and win his second career Nationwide Tour event by a stroke over Dave Schultz at Crestview Country Club in Wichita, Kan.

Tied for the lead when he stepped to the tee of the par-5, 520-yard 18th hole, the 36-year-old Tidland hit a solid drive that left him about 250 yards to the hole. He hit his hybrid to 20 feet, then drained an eagle putt for a two-stroke edge at the time.

“My caddie read it perfectly,” Tidland said of the putt. “I saw about a cup right of the hole and he saw a ball out. I got over the ball the first time and wanted to play a cup, but stepped away from it and told myself to trust his read — he’d read them great all week.”

Six strokes back of leader Jhonattan Vegas entering the final round, Tidland steadily ascended the leaderboard thanks to blemish-free play made possible by consistent iron play. The former Oklahoma State University golfer missed only one green all day and made four birdies on the par-71 layout prior to the 18th hole.

Tidland’s first triumph came at last year’s Albertsons Boise Open, though that victory did not ultimately give him enough earnings to finish inside the top 25 on the money list and earn a 2009 PGA Tour card.

This win is different. Tidland earned $99,000, giving him $293,680 in prize money this season. He is still well behind leading money winner Michael Sim ($414,579), but he is now second on the money list and all but guaranteed a spot on the PGA Tour in 2010.

Prior to this event, he had notched a pair of runner-up finishes on the Nationwide Tour in 2009 — one at the South Georgia Classic in April, and a playoff loss at the Forth Smith Classic in June.
