Covington wins California state community college title

Orange native shoots 70-70 for triumph at Oak Valley.

Connor Covington, a sophomore at Santiago Canyon College, won the 2010 California Community College Athletic Association’s men’s title at the State Community College Individual golf championship on May 17 at Oak Valley Golf Club in Beaumont.

An Orange native, Covington shot rounds of 70-70 to post a 4-under-par 140 and won a card-off to earn medalist honors over Sejun Yoon (Oceanside), who also shot a 140.

This is the first golf championship for Santiago Canyon in the school’s 10-year history.

Covington was the final individual from Southern California to make the field, finishing in a four-way tie for 12th place at the regional finals. There, too, he won a card-off, which qualified him for the championship berth.

Covington’s score earned him All-State honors. Covington also is a two-time All-Conference Orange Empire Conference (OEC) selection, and he earned medalist honors at this season’s OEC finals.
