John Cook, an 11-time PGA Tour winner, needed only two starts to notch his first triumph on the Champions Tour.

The former Rancho Mirage resident, who now splits time living in Florida and Newport Beach, shot a six-under 65 in the final round of the AT&T Championship in San Antonio last Sunday to beat fellow over-50 rookie Mark O’Meara for the title.

O’Meara and Tom Kite held a two-shot lead over Cook entering Sunday at Oak Hills Country Club. Cook’s strong comeback put O’Meara in a position where he had to birdie the par-3 18th hole to force a playoff at 15-under par.

However, instead of birdie, the former Mission Viejo resident made bogey and finished alone in second at 13 under.

"It was not easy out there," Cook said. "Some tricky winds on a good golf course and major championship winners all over the place. Thrilled? I guess I would be thrilled."

Cook made his Champions Tour debut at the Administaff Small Business Classic a week earlier, finishing tied for 36th. He turned 50 on October 2.

He made five of 13 cuts on the PGA Tour in 2007, but figures to spend almost all of his time on the Champions Tour in 2008.
