Corey Pavin has been praised by his peers as a golfer who takes a bulldog mentality on the course. Now, he’ll try to rub off some of that toughness on members of the 2010 United States Ryder Cup squad. On Thursday in New York City, Pavin was introduced as captain of the American team, which will defend its title against the Europeans in September 2010 at Celtic Manor Resort in Newport, Wales. “I’ve been waiting for this day,” said Pavin, a three-time Ryder Cup participant. He has not been shy about his desire to be captain, mentioning this aspiration in an interview with Southland Golf earlier this year. It had been rumored that Paul Azinger, who was the captain of the 2008 U.S. squad that won comfortably at Valhalla Golf Club in September, could return for another stint, but Azinger said earlier this week that someone different would take over. Pavin was born in Oxnard and starred on the men’s golf team at UCLA. The 15-time PGA Tour winner secured his greatest individual triumph at the 1995 U.S. Open, holding off Greg Norman by two strokes. As captain, Pavin will look to secure back-to-back U.S. triumphs for the first time since 1991 and 1993. He was a member of each of those American wins – the 1993 victory marked the last time the U.S. defeated the Europeans on foreign soil. When Pavin was introduced to the biennial competition in ’91, he said the thrill of the dramatic American victory cemented his love for the event. “In 1991, I played in my first Ryder Cup at Kiawah Island, listening to the National Anthem, experiencing the pressure of The Ryder Cup for the first time as a player, watching the last match between Hale Irwin and Bernhard Langer, and of course, throwing Captain [Dave] Stockton into the ocean,” he explained. “I knew then that I wanted to play in as many Ryder Cups as possible and dreamt about being captain some day. “Today, my dream has come true.” |
