The Cox Celebrity Championship annual charity golf tournament, which features top athletes and stars, will be held May 20-23 at Morgan Run Resort and Club in Rancho Santa Fe. Drew Brees, MVP quarterback of the Super Bowl champion New Orleans Saints, will be hosting the event for the first time. Brees, who began his career with the hometown San Diego Chargers, sees this as a great opportunity to give back to the San Diego community. “This is such a unique opportunity for me and my wife Brittany to host this great event” said Brees. “We’ve been part of the San Diego Community since we came here in 2001 and we’ve always wanted to give back in whatever way we could. We love San Diego and its people and we’re honored to host the Cox Celebrity Championship, hopefully for many years to come.” Long one of San Diego County’s premier sports hospitality events, the Cox Celebrity Championship hosted by Drew Brees consists of a two-day celebrity-amateur tournament, nightly sponsor parties, and the main event —a 36-hole celebrity competition for a $100,000 purse. Past champions include four-time winner Rick Rhoden, Dan Quinn, Trent Dilfer, Brian Kinchen, Andy Van Slyke, Grant Fuhr, Mickey Tettleton and defending 2009 champion Jack Marin. As part of Cox Communications’ title sponsorship, Cox’s locally based TV station, Channel 4 San Diego, will produce a one-hour special featuring the tournament’s marquee event. “We’ve been proud to be involved with this event for several years but this year, especially with Drew as the host, there was a special opportunity to take our involvement to a higher level,” said Vice President and General Manager of Channel 4 San Diego, Craig Nichols. “He is a great athlete and inspiring citizen. His commitment to the community is important to all of us at Cox.” A percentage of ticket sales, auction proceeds and sponsor sales from the Cox Celebrity Championship hosted by Drew Brees will be donated to the Brees Dream Foundation and dispersed among San Diego non-profit organizations, including the Armed Forces YMCA, Friends of Scott and Rady Children’s Hospital.
