RANCHO SANTA FE—In the 12th year of a celebrity golf tournament known largely for the plethora of professional athletes it attracts, a non-athlete was victorious for the first time.

Actor Jack Wagner won the 2010 Cox Celebrity Championship hosted by Drew Brees over the weekend at Morgan Run Resort & Club, shooting a 2-over-par 73 Sunday for a 2-under total and a one-stroke edge over former Major League Baseball pitcher Rick Rhoden.

Wagner led after a 4-under 68 in Saturday’s first round, then held on during Sunday’s final round amid cold and windy conditions. While four players broke par Saturday, nobody broke 1-over par Sunday.

“It was a tough day with tough conditions,” said the 50-year-old Wagner, whose acting credits include soap opera staples “The Bold and the Beautiful” and “General Hospital.”

Although this was Wagner’s first victory at the tournament formerly known as the Celebrity Classic, he is quite familiar with the venue, having played in the event all but one year since its 1999 inception. Plus, the Bel-Air Country Club member has amassed an impressive golf resume, including a win at the 2006 American Century Celebrity Golf Championship in Lake Tahoe.

It’s not surprising Wagner found himself dueling with Rhoden. The former MLB hurler has been a fixture at celebrity golf events for more than 20 years, winning at Morgan Run four times and garnering eight titles in the American Century event.

“Rick’s battled everyone because he’s always in the last group,” Wagner said. “I usually am just waiting at the end of the tournament.”

Mickey Tettleton, also a former MLB player and the 2008 Celebrity Championship winner, tied for third at 2-over par along with Dan Quinn, a former National Hockey League player who won this event’s inaugural title back in 1999.

Drew Brees, whose MVP performance helped the New Orleans Saints capture Super Bowl XLIV, hosted the event and helped raise funds for four charities, including his own Brees Dream Foundation. The quarterback, a 3 handicap, struggled on the course with rounds of 85-82.
