Despite lacking the efficiency she displayed in the first round of the U.S. Girls Junior Amateur, Danielle Kang did enough to earn medalist honors in stroke play Tuesday and enter Wednesday’s match-play portion of the event as the No. 1 seed.

The Thousand Oaks resident and member of the women’s golf team at Pepperdine University followed up a 67 Monday with a 74 for a 3-under-par total through 36 holes, one stroke clear of Ginger Howard (Bradenton, Fla.) at The Country Club of North Carolina’s Dogwood course in Pinehurst, N.C.

This is the second time Kang has been a stroke-play medalist at a United States Golf Association event. The 17-year-old topped the field at the 2009 U.S. Women’s Amateur but lost in the first round of match play.

One of the biggest moves Tuesday belonged to Elisabeth Bernabe of Anaheim Hills. The 15-year-old Canyon High School student carded a 2-under-par 70 to vault into a tie for seventh place. Her effort included five birdies and was one of only three scores in red numbers during the second round.

Kristen Park, a Buena Park resident and student at Sunny Hills High School, cruised into match play with a 3-over 75 Tuesday to share 10th place at 4-over par. Park won this event in 2007.

A pair of Southern Californians shot their way into match play after strong second rounds. Rancho Cucamonga’s Gabriella Then, who opened with an 80, followed that with a 74 to tie for 35th at 10-over par.

A similar leap was made by Kaitlin Park of Tustin Ranch. Park shot a 75 Tuesday after an 81 Monday to jump into a tie for 50th at 12-over.

Also tying for 50th was Temecula’s Veronica Valerio (77-79).

Danielle Fraiser (Encinitas) failed to advance after posting rounds of 79-80 to tie for 77th.

With 36 holes of match play complete, the top 64 players now complete in single-elimination match play.
