On the heels of her breakthrough victory at the United States Women’s Amateur, Danielle Kang has been named one of three American team members for the 2010 Women’s World Amateur Team Championship, which will be held October 20-23 at Olivos Golf Club and Buenos Aires Golf Club in Argentina.

Jessica Korda, who lost 2-and-1 to Kang in the 36-hole Women’s Amateur final, will join Kang on the team along with Cydney Clanton.

Prior to capturing the prestigious amateur event at Charlotte Country Club in North Carolina, Kang enrolled early at Pepperdine University and enjoyed a stellar season for the women’s golf team. The 17-year-old Thousand Oaks resident captured the individual title at her second collegiate start, the Bruin Wave Invitational, en route to earning West Coast Conference Player of the Year honors after less than a full season of competition.

This summer, she qualified for and made the cut at the U.S. Women’s Open at Oakmont Country Club in Pennsylvania and captured medalist honors at the U.S. Girls Junior Amateur.

Two more players with Southland ties have been appointed to the American roster. Temeucla resident and UCLA alumna Sydnee Michaels has been named named the first alternate. Stephanie Kono, a rising junior of the UCLA women’s golf team, is the second alternate.

The biennial competition has been played since 1964. Sweden is the defending champion, having won the 2008 title in Australia. The U.S. last won the championship in 1998 and has captured the trophy a record 13 times.

The title is determined by four days of stroke play. A country may field a team of two or three players. In each round, the total of the two lowest scores constitutes the team score for the round. The four-day total is the team's score for the championship.

A record 55 teams from around the world have entered the 2010 edition of the event. It is played in conjunction with the World Amateur Team Championship for men, which will be played October 28-31 at the same two clubs.

The Women's World Amateur Team Championship is conducted by the International Golf Federation, which was founded in 1958 to encourage the international development of the game and to employ golf as a vehicle to foster friendship and sportsmanship.
