According to a report from GolfChannel.com’s Randall Mell, Dave Stockton nearly died at the end of last year as a result of a pulmonary embolism, which is a blockage of the main lung artery. Stockton was hospitalized just before Christmas. The three-time PGA Championship winner and Redlands resident, who gained a new level of notoriety in 2009 after emerging as a short-game coach for San Diegan Phil Mickelson, is recovering. In a conversation with Stockton’s son, Ron, Mell reported that the pulmonary embolism was almost fatal. “Doctors said if the massive clot had moved another half inch through my father’s lung, it would have been lights out,” Ron said to Mell.
