Farmers Insurance to sponsor PGA Tour event at Torrey Pines in San Diego

Tournament will be known as Farmers Insurance Open.

BY ELI MILLERPublished: January, 2010

A title sponsor for the PGA Tour’s annual event at Torrey Pines Golf Course in San Diego has been found less than two weeks before the tournament is scheduled to tee off.

Monday, the Tour announced an agreement with Farmers Insurance, which is based in Los Angeles and one of the largest insurance companies in California. The tournament, scheduled for January 28-31 on the North and South courses at Torrey Pines, will be known as the Farmers Insurance Open.

San Diego’s PGA Tour stop has been searching for a new title sponsor since General Motors, the parent company of automobile manufacturer Buick, filed for bankruptcy last August. Buick, which was under contract as title sponsor through 2010, had been in the event’s name since 1992.

“We couldn't be more pleased that Farmers Insurance has stepped forward to sponsor the tournament and lend tremendous assistance to the host organization, the Century Club of San Diego, including helping to meet its charitable objectives for this year,” said PGA Tour Commissioner Tim Finchem.

It is the event’s third name change in recent months — in the initial period of the search for a new title sponsor last year, the tournament was known as the Century Club of San Diego Invitational, and recently it was renamed the San Diego Open.

Tod Leonard of the San Diego Union-Tribune is reporting that the agreement with Farmers is for one year.

“We look forward to continuing our discussions with Farmers officials following the Farmers Insurance Open in regard to the possibility of a longer-term partnership,” said Finchem.

Zurich Financial Services, the parent company of Farmers, has been the title sponsor of the PGA Tour’s annual event in New Orleans, La., since 2005.

“Like what Zurich Financial Services does in New Orleans, supporting and sponsoring this PGA Tour tournament in 2010 is an extension of our corporate outreach and commitment in continuing to make a difference in Southern California and across the United States,” said Robert F. Woudstra, chief executive officer of Farmers.

“Farmers truly is a knight in shining armor for the Century Club and San Diego,” said Tom Wornham, president and general chairman of the Century Club. “We were prepared to move forward without a title sponsor this year, but this is wonderful news that provides a tremendous boost to the tournament.”

The PGA Tour contributed to this report.
