When Steve Stricker sunk the winning birdie putt in the Deutsche Bank Championship at TPC Boston Monday, it meant he supplanted Cypress native Tiger Woods as the leader in the FedEx Cup race. It also meant a quintet of Southern Californians were officially eliminated from the playoffs, as the top 100 players were trimmed to 70 heading into the BMW Championship. Also, plenty of local players hovering around 30th place — the magic number needed to qualify for the Tour Championship, the final FedEx Cup event — now find themselves on the bubble for advancing. • Was the Deutsche Bank Championship the PGA Tour swan song for La Quinta resident Fred Couples? Probably not, but it’s unclear when the U.S. Presidents Cup captain, who becomes eligible for the Champions Tour on October 3, will tee it up again on the regular circuit now that he’s no longer a part of the FedEx Cup race. Couples was ranked 67th in the FedEx Cup heading into Boston and ended up falling to 84th after missing the cut in last place with rounds of 74-77. • Long Beach resident John Merrick missed the cut in the Deutsche Bank and slid from 62nd to 75th, meaning he won’t be able to tee it up again for PGA Tour competition until the Turning Stone Resort Championship in early October. Merrick, who tied for 10th at the PGA Championship, also missed the cut at The Barclays. • Despite tying for 36th at TPC Boston, UCLA alumnus Scott McCarron was eliminated. He started the event in 90th place and rose only to 82nd. Also finishing tied for 36th was former San Diego State star Scott Piercy, whose finish moved him only from 96th to 88th. USC’s Kevin Stadler also saw his FedEx Cup run end. • North Hills resident Charlie Wi had a solid tie for 19th at Deutsche Bank, lifting him from 69th to 50th. He’ll need an even stronger finish if he is to move inside the top 30 at the BMW Championship. • Former Diamond Bar resident Kevin Na didn’t necessarily hurt himself with a tie for 11th, but he certainly didn’t help himself. The 25-year-old Na began the final round just one shot out of the lead, but never generated any momentum and wound up with an even-par 71 on a day when birdies were abundant. He actually slid from 22nd to 23rd in the FedEx Cup standings. • Poway native Charley Hoffman engineered a torrid start in his final round at TPC Boston with four birdies in his first six holes, only to make four bogeys and just two more birdies the rest of the way en route to a 2-under-par 69. Hoffman moved from 30th to 28th. • Other Southern Californians on the bubble at this week’s BMW Championship: Orange’s Hunter Mahan (21), Los Angeles native Anthony Kim (34), San Diegan Pat Perez (38) and Long Beach’s Paul Goydos (43).
