Headed by BMW Championship winner Woods, four Southern Californians qualify for Tour Championship

Notable local players failing to advance to final FedEx Cup playoff event include Kim and Perez.

Tiger Woods made mincemeat of the field at the BMW Championship over the weekend, winning by eight strokes at Cog Hill Golf & Country Club outside Chicago in the third of four PGA Tour FedEx Cup playoff events. The Cypress native began the week No. 2 in the standings behind Steve Stricker but now heads to the Tour Championship — which begins Sept. 24 at East Lake Golf Club in Atlanta, Ga. — in the top spot.

The FedEx Cup standings were whittled from the top 70 to the top 30 for the Tour Championship, and four Southern Californians are among the select group:

Moving on:

Phil Mickelson. The San Diegan hasn’t finished better than tied for 27th in any of the three FedEx Cup events but still stands in 14th place thanks to an impressive regular season.

Kevin Na. The former Diamond Bar resident moved from 23rd to 18th in the standings thanks to a tie for eighth at Cog Hill, his ninth top-10 finish of the season.

Hunter Mahan. The best word to describe the Orange native’s 2009 season is “steady,” as he’s missed only one cut and finished inside the top 25 14 times.

Heading home:

Anthony Kim. The Los Angeles native could have jumped inside the top 30 with a strong finish at the BMW, but he struggled to a 3-over-par 74 in the final round to finish tied for 23rd in the tournament and 35th in the FedEx Cup.

Charley Hoffman. Like Kim, the San Diego native could have finished inside the top 30 with a strong final round, but tumbled down the leaderboard with a 77.

Pat Perez. The former Torrey Pines High School standout has struggled to find a rhythm since missing time earlier this season with an ankle injury.

Paul Goydos. The Long Beach native struggled mightily at Cog Hill, sealing his FedEx Cup fate with an 81 Sunday.

Charlie Wi. The North Hill resident slid from 50th to 56th in the standings at the BMW.

John Mallinger. The Escondido native, who finished 60th in the standings, hasn’t found consistent form since losing a playoff at the U.S. Bank Championship in Milwaukee.
