Hawaii wins Girls Junior Americas Cup at Morgan Run

San Diego’s Mai shares individual title with Isagawa of Hawaii.

BY ELI MILLERPublished: July, 2010

On Thursday at Morgan Run Resort & Club in Rancho Santa Fe, Hawaii won the Girls Junior Americas Cup, an event comprising 18 teams of four players competing in 54 holes of stroke play.

Cassy Isagawa, Kacie Komoto, Cyd Okino and Alina Ching powered the Hawaiian squad with a cumulative even-par total (211-220-217). Oregon was second at 3-over, and Northern California finished third at 5-over par.

The top three scores for each player were counted on each hole.

Isagawa led Hawaii with rounds of 69-74-71 on Morgan Run’s South and East nines, tallying a 2-under-par total that tied San Diego’s Brittany Mai (74-71-69) for the individual title.

Mai, Courtney Hooton, Spenser Krut and Georgiana Salant combined to help the San Diego squad to a fifth-place finish at 20-over par.

Following them in sixth was the Southern California squad of Beverly  Vatananugulkit (Cerritos), Amy Alston (Rancho Santa Margarita), Kaitlin Park (Tustin Ranch) and Elizabeth Doty (Palos Verdes) at 24-over.

The 18 teams at the Girls Junior Americas Cup hailed from regions around the Western United States and other North American countries. It’s the oldest team event for girls in the United States, having been established in 1978.

“It’s a prestigious event that’s had a lot of great past competitors,” said Megan Mahoney, executive director of the San Diego Junior Golf Association, the host organization. “Plus, it gives the girls a taste of what college golf is like.”

Marquee names that have competed in recent years include Ochoa, Pat Hurst and Brandie Burton.

Entering 2010, squads from Southern California had won the 54-hole competition seven of the past nine years. Individual winners over that time included Whittier’s Lee Lopez, now a member of the UCLA women’s golf team, and Emily Tubert, a Burbank resident who will enroll and play golf at Arkansas this fall.

This marked the first time the Girls Junior Americas Cup had been held in Southern California since 2001, when it was contested at Mesa Verde Country Club in Costa Mesa.
