Defending champion Matt Hoffenberg of Simi Valley, the No. 7 seed, ran into bogey trouble and fell to No. 26 seed Pat Duncan, Jr., of Rancho Santa Fe today, 5 and 3, while No. 1 seed Tim Hogarth of Northridge, the most decorated amateur golfer in the Southland, advanced to the Round of 16 at the second SCGA Match Play Championship at Sandpiper Golf Course. Hogarth defeated Goleta’s Scott Lewis (no. 32 seed), 5 and 4, to advance will face Fullerton’s Alex Shi Yup Kim (16) tomorrow, in the event that takes the top 32 amateurs off the SCGA Points List and top 16 senior players based on points for the senior division. Kim defeated Bryan Hogan (15) of Bakersfield, 3 and 2, in his match, capitalizing on five birdies to Hogan’s one. Other notable names advancing to the Round of 16 are Nick Delio (Valencia), Jeff Wilson (Fairfield) and Austin Graham (San Clemente). In the senior division, defending champion Boyd Martin of Corona del Mar, the No. 2 seed, trounced Jeff Hooper (15) of Chatsworth, 8 and 6, to advance to the quarterfinals. Martin’s three birdies over 12 holes secured the match against Hooper, who stumbled on six bogeys. Martin will face Steve Yavorsky (10) of Capistrano Beach, who topped 1998 SCGA Senior Amateur champion and La Jolla resident Frank Merhar (7), 2 up. Action continues tomorrow at Sandpiper where the Senior quarter- and semi-finals will commence, as well as the regular Round of 16 and quarter-finals.
