![]() (photo: Eddie Meeks) At the ripe age of 37, Mark Wilson captured his fifth PGA Tour victory last month at the Humana Challenge by shooting a staggering 24-under-par (264). Wilson posted the lowest round of his PGA career on Friday when he shot a 10-under-par 62 – a round that included eight birdies and an eagle. Oddly enough, he finished the tournament only 1-under-par on the course’s par-3s but made up for that by dominating the par-4s (8-under-par) and the par-5s (14-under-par). With the weather being a bit fickle and high winds forcing a stoppage in play, Wilson had to play three holes at La Quinta CC on Sunday morning to complete his third round before returning to the Palmer Private Course for his final round on Sunday afternoon. His best finish in three previous starts here was a T33 in 2007. Wilson’s recipe for success was no fluke, as he was T3 in hitting greens in regulation and T8 in putting. By winning the Humana Challenge, Wilson earns 500 FedExCup points and by the tournament’s end had vaulted to No. 2 in the standings, trailing only Johnson Wagner (see below) by 230 points. When asked if he won the tournament on Saturday by not getting completely blown off the course Wilson said, “I think that is where I did win it. Because I chipped in twice, I holed a wedge for an eagle and chipped in for an eagle while the wind wasn’t up. I got off to a good start there, 4-under through my first four holes and just kind of maintained that all day. So shooting 67 over there in those windy conditions, I agree, I think that was the key to winning this week.” Wilson clinched his victory with a 10-foot birdie putt on the final hole, beating Robert Garrigus, John Mallinger and Johnson Wagner by two strokes His victory also went down as the 323rd win on the PGA Tour by a former Nationwide Tour player. Players of the Month Steve Stricker – Starting the year with a win in Maui, Hawaii, at the Hyundai Tournament Of Champions, Steve Stricker is back on track and off to a great start in 2012. He finished the tournament with a score of 23-under-par (269), three shots clear of second place finisher Martin Laird. Stricker’s short game proved once again to be his greatest weapon against the field. Johnson Wagner – Sporting an amazing mustache, Wagner won the Sony Open at the Waialae Country Club in Honolulu, Hawaii, by two shots, collecting his third PGA Tour win. Wagner stayed bogey-free through his last 12 holes. Six players had at least a share of the lead in the final round, but Wagner outlasted them all by capturing the lead on the par-4 10th and finished 13-under-par (267). |
