Orange native Hunter Mahan has been selected as one of two captain’s picks for the U.S. Presidents Cup team, it was announced today. “I’ve been trying to make the team all year long. I’m honored to be a pick again,” said Mahan, who also was selected by U.S. captain Jack Nicklaus for the 2007 edition of the event. U.S. Open champion Lucas Glover was the other pick for the American team in the biennial competition, which pits 12 U.S. players against 12 international players from outside Europe. The event will be held October 8-11 at Harding Park Golf Course in San Francisco, the first time it’s been held on the West Coast. Sticking to his word, U.S. captain Fred Couples, a La Quinta resident, said before last month’s PGA Championship that Mahan would make the team even if he didn’t qualify on points. That virtual guarantee was tested by strong recent performances from other candidates, including veteran Scott Verplank, who finished runner-up at last week’s Deutsche Bank Championship. Mahan finished 13th in the points standings, while Glover finished 11th. Brian Gay, a two-time winner on the PGA Tour in 2009, was 12th. International captain Greg Norman tabbed 17-year-old Japanese star Ryo Ishikawa and Australian Adam Scott as his two picks.
