San Diego’s Jay Hwang won the California State Junior Amateur Championship last week at Oak Valley Golf Club in Beaumont, finishing four shots ahead of runners-up Andrew Levitt of Laguna Niguel and Rancho Cucamonga’s Rico Hoey in the 54-hole event earlier this month. Hwang started slowly, shooting a 1-over-par 73 in the opening round, but followed that with the low round of the tournament, a 7-under-par 65. He closed with a final round 3-under-par 69 to finish at 9-under-par 207. Levitt carded rounds of 75-69-67, while Hoey shot 75-66-70 to post 5-under-par 211. Pete Fernandez (Bakersfield) and Jeff Wibawa (Encino) tied for fourth, finishing at 4-under-par 212. Earlier this year, Hwang was the runner-up at the U.S. Junior Amateur, which earned him a spot in the U.S. Amateur in Tulsa, Okla.
