San Diego's Hwang wins California State Junior Amateur

Runners-up Levitt and Hoey finish four strokes back.

San Diego’s Jay Hwang won the California State Junior Amateur Championship last week at Oak Valley Golf Club in Beaumont, finishing four shots ahead of runners-up Andrew Levitt of Laguna Niguel and Rancho Cucamonga’s Rico Hoey in the 54-hole event earlier this month.

Hwang started slowly, shooting a 1-over-par 73 in the opening round, but followed that with the low round of the tournament, a 7-under-par 65. He closed with a final round 3-under-par 69 to finish at 9-under-par 207.

Levitt carded rounds of 75-69-67, while Hoey shot 75-66-70 to post 5-under-par 211.

Pete Fernandez (Bakersfield) and Jeff Wibawa (Encino) tied for fourth, finishing at 4-under-par 212.

Earlier this year, Hwang was the runner-up at the U.S. Junior Amateur, which earned him a spot in the U.S. Amateur in Tulsa, Okla.
