The International Junior Golf Tour offers young players a chance to prepare for college by staging events with top competition.

By Joel BeersPublished: October, 2009

Juniors from over 30 countries compete in IJGT events.
The world of competitive junior golf has many levels which allow players the opportunity to compete against the best.

The International Junior Golf Tour fits into the upper echelon of that category by offering more than 70 annual events across the country.

Its Southern California series started last month at Temecula Creek Inn and continues with November tournaments at La Costa in Carlsbad and Sycuan Resort in El Cajon, and December events at Sandpiper Golf Club in Santa Barbara and Tahquitz Creek Golf Resort in Palm Springs.

The price for an annual membership is $225, and entry to tournaments ranges from $295 to $495.

“The Tour is set up to help junior golfers get noticed and placed into the college of their dreams,” said Blaik Shew, CEO for the Junior Golf Corporation, the parent company of the International Junior Golf Tour. “They play premier courses across the country, compete against the top-ranked junior golfers, and participate in professionally run golf tournaments.”

Shew said college coaches are aware of the IJGT and the types of players the tournaments attract.

“This is a level of competition right before college, and coaches watch these kids play and follow scores on the Internet week to week,” he said. “This is a way to play college golf and, like the AJGA, we pride ourselves on running professional events with rules officials and a number of sponsors, such as Nike, so there is a level of professionalism you’re not going to find at most junior events.”

IJGT events are held from September through May, and the Tour strives “to create an international flair and feel,” Shew said.

“IJGT events include players from over 30 countries around the world,” he said. “Each event provides a challenging opportunity for junior golfers to develop and improve their golf game.”
