San Diego’s Christopher Tuulik and Burbank’s Emily Tubert won their respective divisions Monday at the 2010 SCGA Junior Challenge, the first JAGS (Junior Amateur Golf Scholars) Tour event of the new year. The two-day, 36-hole event was held at Murrieta’s SCGA Golf Course. While conditions were relatively benign during Sunday’s opening round, they turned hectic for Monday’s final round, as rain and winds in excess of 20 mph made for a tougher setup. Tuulik played steady the whole way in the boys division, shooting 73-74 (3-over par) to win by three strokes over Brea’s Jason Chen, who won the Tour’s Inland Empire Junior Championship last October. Alone in third place was Shearn Chua of Beaumont (78-73 — 151), while Orange’s Ben Heisey, San Diego’s Carson Torchia and Brenton Hirao of Cypress finished in a three-way tie for fourth place at 153. Two talented competitors battled it out for the title in the girls division, as Tubert (75-73 — 148) prevailed by two strokes over Diamond Bar’s Bethany Wu (72-78 — 150). Tubert, who won last October’s Inland Empire Junior Championship and is set to graduate from Burroughs High School later this year, has signed a Letter of Intent to be a member of the women’s golf team at the University of Arkansas. Wu, only 13 years old, won an American Junior Golf Association Preseason event last year at Oak Valley Golf Club in Beaumont. Click here for complete results from the event. JAGS, short for Junior Amateur Golf Scholars, is a junior tour that provides golfers with the chance to play in nationally ranked tournaments. Members must retain a 3.0 grade point average to retain priority spots on the 10-year-old tour.
