Only two under-par rounds were shot in the boys division of October's Inland Empire Junior Championship, the first major of the JAGS Junior Tour 2009-10 season held on the Champions Course at East Valley Golf Club in Beaumont. Fortunately for winner Jason Chen, he posted one of them. The Brea resident shot a 1-under-par 71 on the first day of the event, good for a three-stroke lead. The next day, Chen shot a 73 to post a 144 total, good enough for a four-stroke win over Wu Shuai of Beaumont. Pacific Palisades resident Brian Alle, whose 71 on the second day was the only other under-par score, finished tied for third, five strokes behind along with San Dimas’ Jonathan Rego. Chen, a freshman who graduates in 2013, was one of only seven high school freshmen in the field. In the girls division, Emily Tubert, a high school senior from Burbank, shot a first-round 71 and a second-round 76, rolling to a six-stroke victory over Beaumont’s Ya-Ting Yang. Palmdale’s Jennifer Dilger and Huntington Beach’s Ashley Greer tied for third, eight strokes behind. JAGS, short for Junior Amateur Golf Scholars, is a junior tour that provides golfers with the chance to play in nationally ranked tournaments. Members must retain a 3.0 grade point average to retain priority spots on the 10-year-old tour.
