Rancho Santa Fe resident and former USC men’s golf standout Jamie Lovemark finished third in the Michael Hill New Zealand Open, which kicked off the Nationwide Tour’s 2010 schedule and is the first of two events held in conjunction with the PGA of Australasia Tour. The tournament concluded Sunday at the Hills Golf Club in Queenstown. Lovemark shot a quartet of under-par rounds to finish at 12-under, two strokes behind winner Robert Gates. The 2007 NCAA men’s champion, Lovemark didn’t arrive in New Zealand until Wednesday because of the Monday finish at the PGA Tour’s Bob Hope Classic, where he finished tied for 48th. He celebrated his 22nd birthday last Saturday, the third round of the Hope. Lovemark does not have fully exempt status on either the PGA or Nationwide Tour, but received a sponsor’s exemption to play in the Hope. He should be able to enter his share of Nationwide events because he finished between 151st and 200 on the 2009 PGA Tour money list, placeing him in Category 14. By finishing inside the top 10 at the New Zealand Open, Lovemark automatically qualifies for next week’s Moonah Classic in Victoria, Australia. He left USC after his junior season last year and nearly won the PGA Tour’s Frys.com Open, losing in a playoff. |
