USC junior Jamie Lovemark has told Trojans head coach Chris Zambri he will not return to the team next season, opting to leave school to pursue a professional career. “I think I’m ready, Lovemark told Golfweek. “I’m ready to move on with my life. Being professional is a huge challenge, so I’m looking forward to it. Hopefully it will push me harder and make me a better player.” A Rancho Santa Fe native, Lovemark is one of most accomplished amateurs ever to come out of Southern California. Prior to arriving at USC, he won the 2005 Western Amateur as a 17-year-old, becoming the youngest champion in event history. Then, as a freshman on the Trojans, he engineered one of the greatest collegiate seasons ever, winning four times — including the Pac-10 and NCAA individual titles — en route to garnering both the Jack Nicklaus and Phil Mickelson awards (for nation’s best player and nation’s best freshman, respectively). Lovemark has had success in professional events, making the cut in five of eight career PGA Tour stars, including twice at the Buick Invitational at Torrey Pines in San Diego. The 21-year-old had to forego competing in the NCAA Championships due to a fractured rib suffered earlier this month. Also, he broke his left pinky finger in February and missed two tournaments. Golfweek also reported that Lovemark has yet to determine his competitive schedule for the rest of the season and also hasn’t decided on representation or sponsors. |
