Hwang finishes second in U.S. Junior Amateur

Sixteen-year-old San Diegan falls to Spieth in 36-hole final after beating two Southern Californians in early rounds of match play.

Jordan Spieth, of Dallas, Tex., defeated San Diego’s Jay Hwang 4 and 3, to win the U.S. Junior Amateur title over the weekend at Trump National Club’s New Course in Bedminster, N.J.

Whenever the 16-year-old Hwang had a lead during the 36-hole final, he was unable to hold it for more than a single hole. Hwang birdied the par-4 third to go 1-up early on, then promptly gave back the advantage with a bogey on the par-5 fourth. A similar turn of events occurred near the match’s halfway point, when a 1-up edge on the 18th hole was erased with a bogey and a Spieth birdie.

Spieth birdied the 21st hole of the match to go 1 up and never looked back, eventually closing out the match on the 33rd hole.

“Basically, he beat me on the greens,” Hwang said of his opponent. Hwang missed a few crucial 3-foot putts during the match’s second 18 holes that could have kept the affair closer.

The 16-year-old Hwang, who was raised in Chinese Taipei, shot rounds of 73 and 75 to qualify for the match-play portion of the event. He dispatched a pair of Southland residents in the opening rounds — first Michael Yiu of Laguna Hills and then La Canada’s Anton Arboleda, who had finished second in stroke play.

Caddying for Hwang all week was Encinitas Ranch Golf Club’s John Mason, who also serves as his coach.
