Before the Northern Trust Open teed off last week, Escondido native and former Long Beach State men’s golfer John Mallinger hosted a private clinic at Maggie Hathaway Golf Course for 25 inner-city kids together with the First Tee of South Los Angeles. “It is important that we, as PGA Tour pros, are willing to reach out to inner-city children whenever possible to promote golf,” said Mallinger. “Kids are the foundation of golf’s future. This was a unique opportunity for me to build into kids who, if it weren’t for First Tee, might otherwise not get the exposure to our sport. It was a lot of fun and I hope they all learned a little more about the golf swing.” The event included an inspirational talk to the kids encouraging them to play golf and strive for their goals in the sport. The time consisted of an instructional swing clinic featuring the fundamentals of golf, a putting contest and a three-hole golf challenge pitting the very best of the kids against John. “First Tee is definitely helping these kids learn how to hit the golf ball and play the game of golf with respect for one another,” Mallinger said. “Golf becomes the vehicle for these kids to learn things like respect for others and respect for the game. They learn patience and persistence that hopefully will translate to other areas of their lives. I enjoyed these kids and look forward continuing to be a part of First Tee in any way I can.”
