Mallinger tied for first after three rounds at HP Byron Nelson Championship

Long Beach resident tied with Sabbatini entering final round.

BY ELI MILLERPublished: May, 2009

With 76 career PGA Tour starts under his belt entering this week’s HP Byron Nelson Championship, John Mallinger has arguably his best shot at recording career win No. 1.

The Long Beach resident fired a five-under-par 65 in Saturday’s third round at TPC Four Seasons Resort Las Colinas in Irving, Tex., vaulting him into a first-place tie with Rory Sabbatini at 13-under par.

Mallinger, a 29-year-old Escondido native, has come close to the winner’s circle before. He had a trio of third-place finishes during his rookie season in 2007 and had two more in 2008.
