Escondido native John Mallinger finished runner-up to Bo Van Pelt at the PGA Tour’s U.S. Bank Championship, which concluded Sunday at Brown Deer Park Golf Course in Milwaukee, Wis. Mallinger, a current Long Beach resident, lost to Van Pelt on the second hole of a sudden-death playoff. Mallinger shot a 5-under-par 65 in the final round to finish at 13-under par and get into the playoff. He recorded an eagle and two birdies on three of his final four holes, but also recorded a bogey in that span to find himself tied with Van Pelt at the end of regulation. In the playoff, both players birdied the par-5 18th to start. Then, playing the hole again, Van Pelt notched another birdie while Mallinger could only muster a par. “I'll take a lot of positives out of this. I'm just a little disappointed right now,” said Mallinger after the tournament. He has 81 starts on the PGA Tour and is still seeking his first victory. “I've been here a lot. I think [a win is] eventually going to happen, I don't know when but hopefully sooner than later.” The 29-year-old Mallinger earned $432,000 for his career-best second-place finish. For the season, he stands at $1,623,190 and is in 34th place on the FedEx Cup points list. Other Southern Californians had strong finishes at the U.S. Bank Championship, which was played opposite the British Open: • Diamond Bar’s Kevin Na posted four rounds in the 60s and tied for seventh, his seventh top-10 finish of 2009. • Finishing tied with Na was San Diegan Chris Riley, who posted his first top-10 effort since a tie for third at last year’s U.S. Bank Championship. • Valencia’s Jason Gore was the third Southland player to finish in seventh. • Oxnard native and 2010 U.S. Ryder Cup captain Corey Pavin bounced back from an opening-round 73 with subsequent tallies of 67-67-65 to finish in a tie for 18th place. Pavin, who turns 50 on November 16, recorded his most recent PGA Tour triumph at the U.S. Bank Championship in 2006 Visit pgatour.com for complete scores.
