British Columbia swept team and individual honors at last week's Junior America's Cup at Annandale Golf Club in Pasadena. The team came from behind to beat 36-hole leader San Diego by eight shots, scorching the rest of the field by carding a final-round score of 205, the lowest one-day score for any squad during the tournament. British Columbia finished at 2-over-par 632 for the 54-hole event, while San Diego carded 640. Host Southern California took third place at 648.
Medalist Justin Shin won the individual title by four shots over Yuki Kato (Las Vegas, Nev.), who shot a 54-hole total 209. Shin finished at 5-under-par 205. San Diego's Jay Hwang took third place after carding an even-par 210.
San Diego's Todd Baek finished tied for seventh at 215, while teammate Byron Meth came in at 225, putting him in a tie for 27th. Matthew Negri (El Cajon) carded a 216 to finish in a tie for 12th with fellow Southern California team member Allan Jun (Oceanside), while the third member of their team, Pete Fernandez (Bakersfield), finished in a tie for 23rd at 222.
The Junior America's Cup began in 1959 as a competition featuring the Mexico, Alberta and Southern California Junior Golf Associations. It was expanded in 1972 to allow for more Mexican and Canadian teams as well as more teams from the western United States.
