The Southern California squad ran away with the title at the Junior Americas Cup, a 54-hole team stroke play event that concluded Thursday, July 29 at Isleta Eagle Golf Club in Albuquerque, N.M. Xander Schauffele (San Diego), J.J. Holen (Castaic), Jonathan Sanders (Chatsworth) and Matthew Negri (El Cajon) powered the team to a 21-under-par total of 618, 13 strokes better than Alberta and British Columbia. The top three individual scores were counted for each round. Schauffele shot 73-67-66 for a 7-under total to finish tied for fourth in the individual competition. Southern California was the only team in the 17-squad competition to have all four of its players finish under par. Sanders was at 5-under, while Holen concluded at 3-under par and Negri was 2-under. San Diego — with Garrett Cypher, Bobby Gojuangco, Kevin Gorman and Byron Meth — posted a 3-under-par team total to tie Oregon in fourth place. Meth led the squad at 7-under par. Oregon’s Zach Foushee earned medalist honors at 9-under. Click here for full results. Since 1959, the Junior Americas Cup has showcased some of the most talented junior golfers the western region. The competition brings together 17 teams of the top four boys representing 12 western states, two Canadian provinces and Mexico. Many former participants have gone on to become successful tour players, including Southern Californians Tiger Woods, Phil Mickelson, Fred Couples and Corey Pavin.
