Joshua Jacobs had a little idea in 2003 that has grown into a big success in 2009. His plan for bringing golf to juniors instead of waiting for juniors to come to the game got started in a school hallway. It has become Total Golf Adventures, which now has 1,500 programs at 42 locations in 10 states. “The idea was to make golf accessible to all demographics and ages,” Jacobs said of Total Golf Adventures, which combines golf instruction with life skills components. “To bring the game to the 90 to 95 percent of America that doesn’t play — and the way we’re doing that is bringing our golf programs into schools, Boys and Girls Clubs and YMCAs.” Based in El Segundo, Total Golf Adventures is a five-level program that teaches swing fundamentals, rules, course etiquette and more. “Each level has a life-skills component built into the curriculum,” Jacobs said. “Depending on the level, juniors are also learning about respect, responsibility, integrity, sportsmanship and citizenship.” The program’s flexibility also has helped it expand. At schools, it’s typically an hour a week, and the site could be an outdoor field, basketball court, classroom or gymnasium. And while there’s a cost of $75 to $150 for each level, Jacobs said the inability to pay is never a deterrent. “We don’t want to turn away any kid from this,” he said. “So if a kid is really interested and just doesn’t have the money, there are ways around it.” For more information, visit golftga.com.
