Local juniors shine at Future Champions event

Todd Baek and Courtney Hooton capture titles at inaugural World Championship.

The inaugural Future Champions Golf World Championship, sponsored by Callaway Golf, was held February 14-16 in San Diego County. The 12 and under divisions battled it out at the Doubletree Resort and the 13-14 and Championship Divisions played at Fallbrook’s Pala Mesa Resort.

In the Boys Championship Division (ages 15-18), Todd Baek (San Diego) won the Inaugural Championship. He played steady over three days, shooting an opening 74 that was by followed by a one-under 71 and a 40 over nine holes during Monday’s rainy finish. Baek won by a stroke over Jay Hwang (San Diego). Last December, Baek won the second annual San Diego Junior Amateur, earning him an exemption into this summer’s Junior World Golf Championships – consequently, Hwang has received the exemption into that event by virtue of his finish at the FCT World Championship. Michael Kim (Del Mar) and Alex Forss (Temecula) finished tied for third.

In the Girls Championship Division Courtney Hooton came out on top with solid play over three days despite a few tough holes during the second round which kept the race tight. She shot 76-80-43 to claim the title over Casie Cathrea from Livermore by two strokes.

In the Boys 13-14 Division, Henry Cunningham from Arizona played solid all three days to claim the title. Henry shot 74-74-39 to win by four strokes over D.J. Magee from Rancho Santa Fe. In third place was San Diego standout Ben Doyle

In the Girls 13-14 Division, Jennifer Peng (San Diego) blitzed the field, shooting 81-73-40 to win by 15 strokes over second-place finisher Minjia Luo (Rancho Bernardo). Peng’s second-round 73 was the lowest score by any girl at Pala Mesa by three strokes. Finishing in third was Amanda Kahn (Carlsbad).

Other winners from the younger divisions at Doubletree (6-and-under divisions also played at Colina Park):

Boys 11-12: Sahith Theegala
Girls 11-12: Haley Moore
Boys 9-10: Sihao Yan
Girls 9-10: Alexis Monet Flores
Boys 7-8: Sean Maruyama
