There’s no shortage of organized tournaments for junior golfers to hone their games while competing against top players in the Southland, nation and world. But the Junior Amateur Golf Scholars Tour adds an academic angle, with members having a minimum grade point average of 3.0 paying the lowest tournament entry fees and receiving priority entry into the tour’s 12 annual events. “Junior golfers serious about their game need to play other competitive tours and events,” JAGS founder Cindy Warren said about the tour’s decision to cap its events at 12. “We give junior golfers an opportunity to play in highly competitive events once a month, every month, 12 months a year. This allows junior golfers a guaranteed place to play every month, which still provides them the opportunity to play and experience other tours.” About 90 percent of JAGS members enroll in Division I or Division II schools, Warren said, with about 60 percent receiving some kind of golf or academic scholarship. Past players include: former UCLA standout Daniel Im; former UC Irvine players Jay Choe and Garrett Sapp; current UCI players John Chin (’08 and ’09 Big West Golfer of the Year), and Jane Chin (’09 Big West Golfer of the Year); Long Beach State Freshman Lee Lopez (’09 Big West Freshman of the Year); and USC Sophomore Lizette Salas, already an All-American. Juniors ages 12 to 18 are eligible to play in JAGS events, either as members or non-members, but all players need to be ready to handle the competition. “We do discourage beginners and weed out those whose games aren’t quite ready yet,” Warren said. “For them to get the most out of a JAGS event, they need to be ready to play before entering, and to be working on their games continually.” For more information, visit jagstour.com.
