Learning experience

The Southland has plenty of options for junior golfers who want to learn more about the game or hone their competitive skills.

School’s out for summer, but lessons in competitive play and sportsmanship are in session for Southland junior golfers. Here are some crib notes for parents wishing to sign up their son or daughter:

Junior World Golf Championships

What: Competitive rounds at San Diego-area courses.

When: July 13-17.

Who/how much: For the age 15-17 bracket, the top 20 boys and top 10 girls, along with the top 10 boys and girls on the Golfweek rankings as of May 1, are eligible. In the age 13-14 division, boys must have a certified scoring average of 79 and girls of 85 and better. For the age 14-and-under division, all trophy winners from the previous year are eligible. Entry fees run from $130 to $275.

World Masters of Junior Golf Tournament

What: Open to nationally ranked junior golfers and overseen by PGA professional Marty La Roche of Tijeras Creek Golf Club in Rancho Santa Margarita.

When: July 20-22 at Angel Park Golf Club in Las Vegas. 

History: This first-year event boasts a competitive field and an international playing environment.

Who/how much: Consideration is given to many of the top juniors, including the top 50 juniors on the Golfweek ranking as of May 1.

Junior Amateur Golf Scholars Tour

What: Golfers ages 12-18 can participate in monthly 36-hole, no-cut tournaments. 

When: Program runs September through August, with most tournaments played throughout the Southland.

Who/how much: Three membership levels are available. A minimum 3.0 GPA is required for gold and silver membership, but silver membership is restricted to graduating high school seniors. There is no GPA requirement for bronze membership.

SCPGA Junior Tour   

What: Provides junior players of all skill levels the opportunity to participate in instruction, developmental programs and highly competitive events throughout Southern California.

When: The Summer Series is June 1-Aug. 31, and the Fall Series is Sept. 1-Dec. 31.

History: Inductees to the Junior Tour Hall of Fame include Tiger Woods, Phil Mickelson, Amy Alcott and Mark O’Meara.

Who/how much: Membership is open to juniors ages 7 to 18. Fees are tier-structured, and scholarships and financial aid are available through the SCPGA Foundation.

Future Champions Golf

What: Age-, goal- and academics-oriented instruction and tournament opportunities for all levels of junior golfers.

When: Instruction programs and tournaments are year-round. Two notable events include the Collegiate Prep Camp at Carlton Oaks on July 18-19 and the International Stroke Play Championship at Barona Creek on July 22-23.

History: Founded six years ago by PGA teaching professional Chris Smeal.

Who/how much: An annual fee gives participants membership in the San Diego Junior Golf Association and the opportunity to play on one of two FCG Callaway tours. Instruction takes place mostly at Stadium Golf Center. Members also get discounts at several area courses, including Carlton Oaks.
