Grillo and Jang capture 15-17 age divisions at Junior Worlds

Southern Californians fail to contend in either grouping at Torrey Pines.

BY ELI MILLERPublished: July, 2009

Argentina’s Emiliano Grillo and Korea’s Ha-Na Jang each notched comfortable victories in their respective 15-17 age divisions at the Callaway Junior World Golf Championships Friday at San Diego’s Torrey Pines Golf Course.

It’s the second title for Jang in the 15-17 bracket; she also won on the North Course at Torrey Pines in 2007.

Halfway through the boys draw, Grillo found himself well down the leaderboard thanks to a 7-over-par 79 on the South Course in the second round. But the 16-year-old made the most of his final 36 holes, shooting 67-68 to vault ahead and finish at 3-under-par 285, four strokes better than Han Chang-Won of Korea.

Jang didn’t have as much ground to make up — she trailed leader Moriya Jutanugarn of Thailand by a stroke with 36 holes remaining on the North Course at Torrey Pines. Jang caught fire in her last two rounds, posting a pair of 70s to surge past the field with an 11-under-par total and win by six strokes over Jutanugarn.

While an array of Southern Californians challenged for and captured titles in other Junior World divisions this year, local contingents in both 15-17 age groupings could not overcome strong international competition. The top five finishers for both the boys and girls flights did not feature any Southern Californians.

La Costa’s Trevor Simsby and San Diego’s Jay Hwang both posted 7-over-par 295s to finish tied for sixth on the South Course, 10 strokes behind Grillo. The closest Southland finishers on the girls side were Danielle Frasier (Encinitas) and Danielle Kang (Thousand Oaks), who each tied for ninth at 1-over-par 297. Kang entered the title discussion with a 5-under-par 69 in the third round but backed up with a 79 on the final day.

Frasier, a 16-year-old who will be attending Stanford University on a women’s golf scholarship in 2010, has won two Junior World titles in younger age divisions but had finished second in two previous appearances in the 15-17 bracket. She will complete high school before next year’s Junior Worlds and will still be eligible to enter the event; however, she told the San Diego Union-Tribune this week she’s unsure if she’ll compete in 2010.
