Former USC standout Kevin Stadler may not have captured his first career PGA Tour win over the weekend at the Wyndham Championship, but his runner-up finish was enough to secure a spot in the FedEx Cup playoffs and essentially lock up full-time playing privileges for 2010. The 29-year-old Stadler, the son of San Diego native and 13-time PGA Tour winner Craig Stadler, lost to Ryan Moore on the third hole of a sudden-death playoff at Sedgefield Country Club in Greensboro, N.C. Despite not taking home a trophy, Stadler earned $457,600 — the most lucrative check of his career, besting the $365,340 for winning the European Tour’s 2006 Johnnie Walker Classic in Australia. Stadler now has earned $882,414 and 557 FedEx Cup playoff points on the PGA Tour this season, which place him 80th in 76th in those respective standings. The son of the Walrus can now tee it up in the playoffs, which begin this week with the Barclays in New Jersey. He also has nearly guaranteed a spot on the PGA Tour in 2010, no small feat considering he began the 2009 season with limited status after finishing 145th on the money list in 2008. The performance at Wyndham also marked the first time Stadler seriously contended for a Tour title. His previous best finish was a tie for second at the Reno-Tahoe Open in 2007, though that still placed him five strokes behind winner Steve Flesch. “I haven’t been in this position very often — I have on different levels, but not out here,” said Stadler, who has won four times on the Nationwide Tour in addition to his triumph on the European Tour. “It was fun, [just] didn’t come out on top.” Stadler, who closed with a 4-under-par 66, had a chance to win the tournament during regulation on the par-4 18th hole. But he left his eight-foot par putt short to post the only bogey of his final round and finish in a three-way tie at 16-under par with Moore and Jason Bohn. After both Stadler and Moore made par on No. 18 in the first extra hole and Bohn was eliminated with a bogey, Stadler nearly won again when his birdie bid on the second playoff hole — the par-4 10th — just slid past the cup. Stadler’s bogey on the third playoff hole, again the 18th, opened the door for Moore to seize his first career PGA Tour title. San Diego native Chris Riley began the final round holding a share of the lead with Sergio Garcia but plummeted down the leaderboard with a 4-over-par 74. Riley finished tied for 13th, also earning enough FedEx Cup points to vault into 119th place and qualify for the Barclays. La Quinta resident and 2009 U.S. Presidents Cup team captain Fred Couples had a steady week in Greensboro and finished tied for fifth, moving over $1,000,000 in earnings and locking up his 2010 PGA Tour status should he decide to remain a full-time member (the 49-year-old turns 50 in October, thus becoming eligible for the Champions Tour). Ventura native Corey Pavin, who also becomes eligible for the Champions Tour later this year when he turns 50 on November 16, finished in the money for the fifth-straight tournament with a tie for 32nd at Wyndham. However, that effort was not high enough to move him inside the top 125 spots for the FedEx Cup playoffs — Pavin finished 129th.
