Matt Siporin of Tarzana defeated Long Beach’s Boris Stanchev 2-and-1 last weekend in the L.A. City Match Play Championship at Rancho Park Golf Course.
Siporin opened the event by earning medalist honors at the stroke play qualifying round on August 15 at Encino Golf Course. Siporin carded an 8-under-par 64 to win by one stroke over Tain Lee of San Juan Capistrano. Stanchev shot 1-under-par 71.
An incoming sophomore at Santa Barbara City College, Siporin helped lead the Vaqueros to seven victories during the 2008-09 season.
Siporin won his semi-final match 3-and-2 over Andrew Gunson, while Stanchev needed 21 holes to beat his semi-final opponent, Sam Yi.
Match play began on August 16 at Wilson Municipal Golf Course with 32 players in contention. Harding Municipal Golf Course hosted the second round, while Rancho Park hosted round three through the finals on August 22 and 23.
