A familiar LPGA Tour trend continued in the first round of the Kia Classic Presented by J Golf, even as the ladies circuit returned to American soil — a leaderboard dominated by players hailing from outside the United States. South Korea’s Na On Min fired a bogey-free 6-under-par 66 in Thursday’s first round to grab the early lead at La Costa Resort and Spa in Carlsbad, one stroke ahead of fellow Korean Na Yeon Choi and a pair clear of Inbee Park, Seon Hwa Lww — two more Koreans — and Scotland’s Catriona Matthew. The highest-ranking American through 18 holes is Amanda Blumenherst, a former star on the women’s team at Duke University who is a rookie this season. She is tied for sixth at 3-under with In-Kyung Kim of South Korea. Twenty-three players broke par at La Costa’s Tournament Course, and most of the birdies came before winds picked up in the afternoon. Lorena Ochoa, the No. 1 player in the Rolex Rankings, posted a 2-under-par 70 and is tied for eighth. At one point, Michelle Wie stood at 2-under par through 11 holes but closed with bogeys to fall back to even par, where she finished for the day. Since a respectable rookie season in 2007, Min has struggled to enter tournaments consistently because of a wrist injury. In ’07, she finished third at the LPGA Championship en route to ranking 40th on the money list. After making the cut in just 15 of 26 events in 2008, the 21-year-old entered only seven tournaments a year ago. For a complete leaderboard, visit LPGA.com.
