Jennifer Song, a sophomore on the USC women’s golf team, is one of seven amateurs who has received an exemption to play in the Kraft Nabisco Championship, the LPGA Tour’s first major of 2010 that takes places annually at Mission Hills Country Club in Rancho Mirage. Song also plans to turn professional shortly after competing for the United States team in the Curtis Cup, which will be held June 11-13 at Essex Country Club in Manchester, Mass. Golfweek’s Beth Ann Baldry reported that Song is planning on making the transition between the Curtis Cup and the U.S. Women’s Open, which begins in early July. A native of Ann Arbor, Mich., who grew up in Korea, Song is one of the most accomplished female amateurs in Southern California history. In 2009, the 20-year-old became only the second player ever to win both the U.S. Women’s Amateur and the U.S. Women’s Amateur Public Links in the same year. Besides victories in those United States Golf Association events — not to mention a tie for 13th at last year’s Women’s Open — she recorded the lowest single-season stroke average in Trojans history as a freshman. Besides Song, Jennifer Johnson has received an exemption into the Kraft Nabisco. A La Quinta resident currently competing as a freshman on the Arizona State women’s golf team, Johnson lost to Song 3-and-1 in the Women’s Amateur final. Other amateurs to receive an exemption to the Kraft Nabisco Championship, which will be held April 1-4: junior standouts Alexis Thompson and Jessica Korda, and college players Candace Schepperle, Cydney Clanton and Kimberly Kim. American Brittany Lincicome is the Kraft Nabisco's defending champion, winning in dramatic fashion with an eagle on the final hole.
