Former UCLA women’s golfer and San Diego native Hannah Jun was one of several Southland residents to qualify for the finals of LPGA Qualifying School by virtue of a top-30 finish in sectional qualifying at Mission Hills Country Club in Rancho Mirage last week. Jun finished ninth at the 72-hole sectional qualifier, posting a 5-under-par total of 283. She was 11 shots back of medalist Amanda Blumenherst, a former Duke University standout. Blumenherst bested the field by six shots, finishing at 16-under-par 272, which included the event’s low score of 7-under-par 65 in the third round. Former Southern California collegiate players Maria Jose Uribe and Jane Chin also earned a berth to the final, both finishing tied for 11th at 3-under-par 285. Uribe, a native of Colombia, played for UCLA and beat Blumenherst in the final of the 2007 U.S. Women’s Amateur at Crooked Stick Golf Club in Indiana. Chin played for UC Irvine and was part of the first UCI women’s golf team to make it to the NCAA Championships in 2005. San Clemente’s Ryann O’Toole, who also attended UCLA, qualified by firing a 2-under-par 286 to finish in a tie for 14th. Selanee Henderson, a native of Apple Valley, was the second UCI graduate to earn her way to the final. The 2006 Big West Player of the Year, who notched six wins during her time with the Anteaters, finished 19th, carding a 1-under-par 287. Amongst those who fell short of qualifying were former Pepperdine University player Eileen Vargas, Stanford graduate and San Gabriel native Caryn Wilson, and USC graduate Paola Moreno. Those who moved on will have an opportunity to earn status on the LPGA Tour for the 2010 season at the Q-School final, which will be contested at LPGA International in Daytona Beach, Fla. this December. In addition to the top-30 qualifiers and ties from the two sectional events — this, and the eastern sectional in Florida next week — the top 10 players on the year-end money list of the Duramed Futures Tour will receive berths to the final.
