The annual Len Kennett Championship for Junior Golfers, held July 2 this year at Lakewood Country Club, provides youngsters a chance to compete against a top-notch field and be treated like big-time players. “One of the finest moments for all the juniors who participate is when [Len] is on the first tee, dressed in his coat and tie, announcing all the players, from 6:30 a.m. until the last group around 2 p.m., with the exact same enthusiasm and passion as many players receive in national golf events,” said Mike McMonegal, assistant golf director for the Los Angeles County Department of Parks and Recreation. Kennett’s dedication to juniors started years ago with free golf instruction. “I worked side by side with Paul Runyan, who was fresh off winning two PGA Championships,” said Kennett, now 83, who played golf at USC. “Later, I was selected as professional at the Marine Memorial Golf Course and immediately started no-charge lessons for kids. After lessons I would buy ice cream for the kids.” Kennett soon realized that his instruction could be enhanced with a tournament, which began in 1955. As he moved on with his career, which included stints at Lakewood, San Gabriel Country Club, and Los Verdes Golf Course, Kennett continued the tournaments and free lessons. “Len represents the traditions of the game, and others who wish to continue carrying on the traditions need to experience his passions and knowledge,” McMonegal said. “I can only hope that I will be involved in carrying on his traditions.” For more information on The Len Kennett Championship for Junior Golfers, visit lacountyjuniorgolf.com. |
