Letzig goes low at Nationwide Tour Championship

With a PGA Tour card on the line, Michael Letzig did what any sane touring professional would do.

Lakeside, Calif. — With a PGA Tour card on the line, Michael Letzig did what any sane touring professional would do.

He put a new putter in his bag.

While that decision may seem maniacal to some, it proved to be genius for Letzig, who needed only 24 putts to post a scorching 11-under par 60 for a three-shot lead after Thursday’s opening round of the Nationwide Tour Championship at Barona Creek Golf Club.

“It was time for something new to look at it,” Letzig said of the flat stick switch, something he hadn’t done in five years. “I didn’t plan on changing it, but last week (at the Miccosukee Championship) I didn’t make anything.”

At 26th on the money list, Letzig is one spot out of the year-end cut line for earning a 2008 PGA Tour card.

“Everybody around you is nervous for you. I’m not nervous,” he said.

Gary Christian and Tjaart van der Walt both carded 8-under 63s, tying for second behind Letzig.

Peter Tomasulo, a Long Beach native who began the tournament at 46th on the money list, fired a solid 5-under 66 to start the event inside the top 10. More than $50,000 behind Letzig, Tomasulo knows it will probably take at least a second-place finish to get inside the top 25.

But he’s not letting any pressure spoil his fun at such a memorable venue — Barona Creek was the site of his first collegiate victory in 2002.

“I haven’t been this excited to come down to a golf tournament in a long time,” said Tomasulo. “In my position right now, I can only move up.”
