On May 24, Mark Marney became the City of San Diego’s new golf operations manager. The 47-year-old, who had previously worked in the city’s park and recreation department from 1997 through 2007 — including a stint in golf operations from 2005 through 2007 — rejoins the City of San Diego after working as deputy director for parks, recreation and community services in San Jose. Marney is replacing Jon Maddern, who left the post earlier this year to become superintendent of The Cliffs at Keowee Falls in Salem, S.C. Both Maddern and Marney had previously served under Mark Woodward, who oversaw Torrey Pines Golf Course when the U.S. Open was held at the South Course in June 2008. Marney has a bachelor of science degree in landscape architecture from Cal Poly-San Luis Obispo and a masters degree in business administration from Point Loma Nazarene University. He also worked at Point Loma Nazarene as the school’s director of community development prior to leaving for his post in San Jose. Besides Torrey Pines, Marney will be responsible for overseeing operations at Balboa Park and Mission Bay golf courses. He also will direct major tournaments such as the PGA Tour’s annual Farmers Insurance Open at Torrey Pines. |
