Warman’s late run seals California State Open title

Early leader Yip falters with 75 in final round at Country Club at Soboba Springs.

BY ELI MILLERPublished: November, 2009

San Clemente's Mark Warman, a former member of the men's golf team at San Diego State, closed with a 67 to win the California State Open (COURTESY: SCPGA).
Mark Warman began the final round at last week’s California State Open six shots behind leader Ryan Yip and didn’t seem poised to make a title run after three bogeys in his first seven holes.

But all of a sudden, Warman got hot.

The San Clemente resident and former member of the San Diego State men’s golf team went 6-under par on his final 11 holes — including birdies on the last two — to surge to a 4-under 67 and a 7-under-par total good enough for victory at the Country Club at Soboba Springs in San Jacinto.

Torrance’s Lucas Lee, who left UCLA early to pursue a professional career, finished one stroke behind after also shooting a final-round 67 in the 54-hole event.

Yip, a Canada native who resides in Indio, closed with a 4-over-par 75 that included three birdies, four bogeys and a costly triple-bogey on the par-3 15th hole.

The 28-year-old Warman earned $16,000 as a result of his first professional win.

“My game’s been pretty good for a while now and I’ve just been waiting to get a break or two — now I’m hoping this is it,” Warman told the Riverside Press-Enterprise.

The win nets Warman an automatic exemption into the field at the Nationwide Tour’s Soboba Classic in 2010, an event that will be held at the same venue.

Other prominent finishers from the California State Open at the Country Club at Soboba Springs:

Ryan Martin, a 23-year-old from Thousand Oaks, posted three sub-par rounds en route to a 5-under-par total and a tie for third, earning low amateur honors.

Sam Cyr, a former standout at San Diego’s Point Loma Nazarene University, also tied for third.

• After finding himself among the leaders with an opening 67, 14-year-old Rico Hoey finished tied for 13th at 2-under par thanks largely to a 76 in the second round. The Rancho Cucamonga resident did close with a 3-under-par 68.

• Among others part of the logjam in 13th: Monrovia’s Blake Moore, who is a contestant on the current season of Golf Channel’s “Big Break” reality game show; Laguna Niguel native Cameron Tringale, who turned professional this year after an All-American tenure on the men’s golf team at Georgia Tech University; and Burbank’s Tommy Barber, grandson of 1961 PGA Championship winner Jerry Barber.

• Defending California State Open champion Kyle Thurston, a Moorpark resident, tied for 27th.
